The Andrea Hlavackova Foundation

Crédit photo : Andrea Hlavackova’s personnal archives

Andrea Hlavackova is one of the brightest doubles player on the WTA tour, she won 3 Grand Slam titles, 2 Fed Cup with the Czech team, and an Olympic silver medal with her partner Lucie Hradecka. But despite all these success, the player from Pilsen always stayed so humble and down to earth and tries to use her celebrity in the best possible way through her foundation.

As I said, Andrea Hlavackova could just have been a great doubles player and one of the sexiest women on the WTA tour, but no, she is not this kind of girl. She really wanted to do something useful and help a good cause. That’s why she created the Andrea Hlavackova Foundation in 2012. The aim of this foundation is mainly to collect financial resources and funds in order to help the families of handicapped kids and young handicapped people with integration into the society.

And to raise money for the kids, Andrea Hlavackova regularly organises auctions on her official website with a lot of different signed stuff like posters, official tracksuits, rackets, racket bags, skirts… It appears to be a really great idea as it can make fans and kids happy at the same time 🙂 All profits from auctions go to Hájek Center, which is in Pilsen region. Hájek Center provides to divide intensive care for a handicapped child between family and care Center and so it reduces mental and physical stress of all members of the family.

Personally I sincerely admire the work Andrea Hlavackova is doing with her foundation, because it’s obvious that it’s not a commercial thing, she is 100% involved in every decisions and takes care of everything. I remember her saying me about her foundation “ it’s like my baby 🙂 ” And it’s true, if you want to help her foundation, you can easily get in touch with her and see what to do. I heard that Andrea expects that in the future her foundation will help other similar organizations not only in Pilsen region, but all over the Czech Republic… That’s all what I wish to them !

After that, Lucie Safarova had to fight a bit more to take the 2nd point for Czech Republic as Kerber had a 4-2 lead in the 2 sets of the match. But Safarova never gave up and Kerber struggled a bit with her nerves which gave the opportunity to Safarova to win this important match.

With an eighth Fed Cup triumph, Czech Republic, who won three title this past four years, now move above Australia to become the second most successful nation in the competition, but it took a lot of heart from the Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova to get them over the line on Sunday. The world number 4 came through a gripping battle 7-6(5) 4-6 6-4 to end any hope of a German comeback from 2-0 down and secure victory for her nation in an amazing atmosphere in front of 13 000 Czech fans in a sold-out O2 Arena in Prague. « It is an emotion I have never had this year,” said Petra Kvitova after she gave the decisive point to the Czech Republic. “Wimbledon was totally different. I didn’t have this emotion, I was playing so well during Wimbledon but here it was really up and down. That’s why it is great to play the Fed Cup Final. It’s for your country but always when you are not feeling great and you don’t have enough energy, you always find something and I’m not sure where I found it. I am just glad that I found it. »

To end this day Germany picked up a point thanks to Julia Goerges and Sabine Lisicki who beat Andrea Hlavackova and Lucie Hradecka 6-4 6-4 in the dead doubles rubber. Whatever the result of this last match, All the Czech team was over the moon during the trophy ceremony and still at the dinner of champions.

Czech Republic joins Germany in 2014 Fed Cup final !

The Czech Republic has cruised into the Fed Cup final for the third time in four years this Sunday after Petra Kvitova gave her country the decisive point in the tie against the defending champion Italy in Ostrava. At the end of the weekend the Czechs won the tie 4-0 without losing a set in singles.

After 2 great wins from Lucie Safarova and Petra Kvitova on Saturday, the Czech Republic’s leader, Kvitova, ensured her nation will have a chance of winning its eighth Fed Cup crown after she ground out the win 6-3 7-5 against a fired-up Roberta Vinci this Sunday. Spurred on by the colourful make-shift musical band in the stands though, Kvitova repeatedly dug herself out of trouble with her booming serve.

“It was an unbelievable atmosphere but it was a very tough match for me against Roberta [Vinci] who is a very different player to Camila [Giorgi]. She returned very well and my serve didn’t help me as much as yesterday. It was difficult for me but I won the important points,” said Petra Kvitova.

The Czech Fed Cup team captain Petr Pala led his players to a dancing circle on the court before acknowledging the vocal home fans with a team bow. He said the victory gives his team the opportunity to relive great memories of their 2012 Fed Cup victory over Serbia. “It feels great, you never have enough. Really looking forward. We have another home final and we still have memories from that final because it was a really great experience for all of us with a sold out crowd. We are really looking forward but now we want to enjoy this moment,” Petr Pala said.

In the final doubles, Andrea Hlavackova teamed up with Klara Koukalova to overcome Camila Giorgi and Karin Knapp 6-2 5-7 11-9 to make it 4-0 for the Czech. The Czechs will now face Germany in the Fed Cup final which will take place in November at home. « It will be great to play the final at home, » Kvitova said. « We have an excellent team, it’s not just about one player. » It’s the third final for the Czechs in four years after they claimed the Fed Cup title in 2011 and 2012 and won nine of the last 10 Fed Cup ties, losing only to Italy in last year’s semis.

Crédit photo : Andrea Hlavackova’s personnal archives

Interview with Lucie Safarova

Few days ago she won the doubles title in Sydney with her partner Timea Babos. Tomorrow Lucie Safarova will play her first round match at the Australian Open, the first Grand Slam of the season. While she was still in Sydney, Lucie Safarova has kindly taken a bit of her time to answer some questions for me about her off season, her new partnership with Andrea Hlavackova and her goals for this season.

For the first time of her career Lucie Safarova decided to spend her off season outside Czech Republic. With her coach Rob Steckley, Safarova worked hard for this new season in Florida. Even if it was tough to be far from home during christmas, Safarova believes this choice will help her : « There has been a lot of female players with whom I was able to play games, and there was a similar climate as in Australia, it will definitely help me. It was a different experience. I of course was very homesick. Christmas is not very nice on the plane. That was very sad because my family could only talk via skype, while we sang carols. They sent me a packet of sweets and wishes, it was really great. »

And for this new season Lucie Safarova made another change. After a year playing doubles with success with Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, she will now play with her great friend, olympic games’ medalist, and grand slams’ winner, Andrea Hlavackova : « Doubles is important for me too, but I want to enjoy doubles too, and with Andrea I feel it. There is a good connection. We agreed that Andrea adapts her plan and we play doubles together at major tournaments. Slams are the most important in the season. I certainly didn’t want to split up Andrea Hlavackova and Lucie Hradecka. Andrea felt that way, and so she decided… There is nothing negative. Girls had really great results together. »

Another resolution for Lucie Safarova is to be more patient on the court, and mainly to be healthy for the upcoming season : « I still try to play aggressively, and at the same time I want to be patient. I’ve been training it in Florida, I still want to improve this. I mainly want to be healthy, to me in the last few years it completely failed. If I could be at my maximum, that would be great. »
