Hello! 🙂 As for Germans, I will try to give a regular update on the WTA Czech players latest results and performances on the tour. I won’t do it every week of the year, but will try to do it every time there will be important tournaments with several Czechs implied 🙂 I hope you will enjoy it, and of course, let me know if you don’t find it useful or have any suggestion to make it better! 🙂 Pojd!!

As in my previous post about the Germans I think it could be good to have a look on the Czech girls’ results after one week at the Australian Open. As always there is some good surprises, some deceptions, and some expected things…

The positive points : Obviously the first big plus for the Czechs is Barbora Strycova, the only Czech who reached the 4th round of the Australian Open this year. She started with a good win over Caroline Garcia and caused the sensation in the 3rd round with her straight sets win over Garbine Muguruza, the world number 3. Now there is another big challenge who awaits Barbora Strycova as she will face Victoria Azarenka for a place into the last 8! Then there is Kristyna Pliskova who beat Samantha Stosur in her opening match and then lost to Monica Puig in the 2nd round in one of the most exciting match of the week. Despite the loss it’s still a very good and positive week for Kristyna Pliskova who beat the record of the number of aces in a WTA match with 31 aces. And there is no doubt than Karolina’s twin sister should continue to improve and she should hear again about her this year! To conclude, the last plus for the Czechs is Denisa Allertova who reached the 3rd round where she lost to Johanna Konta. But she still managed to get a big win over Sabine Lisicki.

Nor positive, nor negative points : In my opinion there is only one player to put in this section and it’s Lucie Hradecka who lost to Daria Gavrilova in the 1st round. Yes it’s a first round loss, but when you see the level of the Australian and it’s not a bad performance for Lucie Hradecka. Maybe we could had Katerina Siniakova who lost to Timea Bacsinszky in the 1st round. It’s not a below-average performance, but I think she could have won this match…

The negative points : The obvious big negative point is Petra Kvitova, the Czech number one who lost against Daria Gavrilova in the 2nd round. It’s a minus, but is it a real surprise? I think it’s not because it was only the third match of the year for Kvitova who had a gastrointestinal illness in Shenzhen and couldn’t really trained until she arrived in Melbourne. Tired and without confidence against an on fire Gavrilova, her loss is then not a big surprise for me. The other real minus is Karolina Pliskova who lost to Ekaterina Makarova in the 3rd round. Pretty disappointed for the number 9 seed in Melbourne. As in 2015, it seems the still young but already very talented Czech struggles in the Grand Slams… To conclude we have Klara Koukalova and Petra Cetkovska who both lost in the 1st round against Nicole Gibbs and Sabine Lisicki… Honestly it’s hard to know what to expect from these two this year. We know what they are capable of but how strong is their motivation? We should have more answers soon…

Here it is for this first week of the Australian Open! Let me know if you’re agree with me or not and what’s your opinion on the week of the WTA Czech players! 🙂

Une réflexion au sujet de « WTA week of the Czechs – N°1 »

  1. Quel fantastique tournoi de Barbora 🙂 J’espère qu’elle n’est pas dopée comme en 2013.. ^^ Très déçue pour Petra mais bon Daria jouait devant son public, et oui elle est australienne maintenant ^^
