Barbora Zahlavova Strycova caused the sensation of Wimbledon so far by sending second seed Li Na crashing out in the third round. At the age of 28 Barbora Zahlavova Strycova is maybe playing the best tennis of her career since few months. With her coach, the French Jerome Adamec, she brings a new dimension to her game. The Czech hasn’t an usual game and has no fear do to some serve and volley, come to the net or use a lot of dropshots. Strycova, the entire crowd, a line judge and the umpire thought the match was over when Li sent a forehand apparently long after serving at 6-5 behind, but an appeal was launched and Hawk-Eye showed it had flicked the outside extremity of the baseline. With the win finally beyond doubt, Strycova walked around the court, taking in the crowd’s acclaim and yelling ‘Come on!’ before departing to another huge ovation.

Here is Barbora Zahlavova Strycova’s reaction during her press conference : « I feel great here and I felt great in Birmingham, I believed in myself coming into this match. I thought I can do it and that’s what happened. I’m really glad I could pull through. The key was just the belief. The belief in myself, to not give her any easy points. I think I did that right. I was serving very well. I was following the tactics that my coach gave me and I think that was the key. This is my first time in the second week of a Grand Slam so I will enjoy. I will do the same like I did the previous matches: I will focus on myself, on my game, and we see how it goes. »

And about the famous matchpoint : « I think I did great today mentally. It wasn’t easy. The last point she challenged the match point and I thought I won the match, and I didn’t hear that she challenged it, and I looked at the referee, and then it was in. It was really tough – you kind of won the match, but then you didn’t win it. And it was so far away still – I was thinking to myself, like, ‘Oh my gosh.’ But I wasn’t nervous at that point. I knew what I would have done. »

But this day was just an amazing one for Czech Republic as all the other 3 Czech girls who were on Wimbledon’s courts won their matches. Indeed, Lucie Safarova beat Dominika Cibulkova 6-4 6-2, Tereza Smitkova won a tough battle against Bojana Jovanovski 4-6 7-6 10-8, and Petra Kvitova won the best match of the tournament so far against 5th times champion Venus Williams 5-7 7-6 7-5.

Barbora Zahlavova Strycova a créé la sensation du tournoi de Wimbledon jusqu’à présent en éliminant la tête de série n°2 Li Na. A 28 ans, Barbora Zahlavova Strycova joue peut être le meilleur tennis de sa vie depuis quelque mois. Avec son coach, le français Jérôme Adamec, elle a apporté une nouvelle dimension à son jeu. La Tchèque n’a pas un jeu habituel et n’a pas peur d’enchainer les service-volé, de venir au filet ou bien d’utiliser les amorties. Et grâce à son jeu technique, la Tchèque a réussi à venir à bout de la championne de l’Open d’Australie.

Strycova, l’ensemble de la foule, un juge de ligne, et l’arbitre pensais que le match était terminé quand Li Na a frappé un coup droit apparemment en dehors des limites du terrain. Mais le Hawk-Eye montra que la balle avait touché la ligne extérieure. Mais le suspense fut de courte durée puisque Li Na servit une double faute dans la foulée qui donna finalement la victoire à Strycova qui profita d’une très belle ovation du court n°1 de Wimbledon.

Voici la réaction de Barbora Zahlavova Strycova lors de sa conférence de presse d’après match : « Je me sens bien ici et je me sentais bien à Birmingham, Je croyais en moi en débutant ce match. Je pensais que je pouvais le faire, et c’est ce qui est arrivé. Je suis vraiment contente d’avoir pu le faire. La clé était juste la conviction. De croire en moi, de ne pas lui donner de points faciles. Je pense que j’ai bien fais cela. J’ai très bien servis. J’ai suivis la tactique que mon coach m’avait donnée et je pense que c’était la clé. C’est la première fois pour moi en deuxième semaine d’un Grand Chelem donc je vais en profiter. Je vais la même chose que lors des matchs précédents : Je vais me concentrer sur moi-même, mon jeu, et nous verrons comment ça va se passer. »

Et à propos de la fameuse balle de match : « Je pense que j’ai été solide mentalement aujourd’hui. Ça n’était pas facile. Quand elle a challengé sur le dernier point, je pensais que j’avais gagné le match, et je n’avais pas entendu qu’elle avait challengé, et j’ai regardé l’arbitre, et la balle était bonne. C’était vraiment dur. Vous pensez que vous avez gagné le match, et puis finalement non. La victoire était encore si loin. Je me suis dit ‘Oh mon dieu.’ Mais je n’étais pas trop nerveuse. Et je sais ce que j’aurais fait (si elle n’avait pas servi une double faute). »

Mais cette journée a tout simplement été fantastique pour les Tchèques car les 3 autres joueuses qui étaient sur les courts de Wimbledon ont toutes remporté leur match. En effet, Lucie Safarova a battu Dominika Cibulkova 6-4 6-2, Tereza Smitkova a remporté un long match contre Bojana Jovanovski 4-6 7-6 10-8, et Petra Kvitova a remporté le meilleur match du tournoi jusqu’à présent contre Venus Williams (5 fois vainqueur à Wimbledon) 5-7 7-6 7-5.
